A Jewish Christmas Medley

We are getting into full carol mode these days, singing all the wonderful Christmas hymns from the past and a few from the present. Our carols tell the story of our faith in such a wonderful way.

Did you realize that most of the favourite secular songs of the season were written by Jews, not Christians? Take a look at the list:

Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,”
“The Christmas Song” (yes, Mel Tormé was Jewish),

“Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,”

“I’ll Be Home for Christmas,”

“Silver Bells,”

“Santa Baby,”

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”

“Winter Wonderland”

I know it isn't politically correct to say this, but oy vey those Jews are good at everything!
Have you got a favourite on the list?

For those of you who immediately think of Der Bingle when you think of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas", here is a link to another version (maybe even a better one) by someone who was billed as "the world's greatest entertainer", and yes ... he also happened to be Jewish.

May your days be merry and bright ...
... and may all your Christmases be white.

All the songs are familiar favorites but two have become family traditions. It was a yearly ritual for Dad and I to watch White Christmas each year and we were so familiar with the movie that we could tell what parts the station cut to make room for the commerials in the 2 hour period. So, White Christmas is my personal favorite. Yet, my sister's favorite story as a toddler/preschooler was about 'poor Rudolph' that I remember reading over and over (since I was the older sister). Both movies are still family favorites and are watched either on the TV or on DVD during the Christmas season with the next generation.

Thanks for the link G. Yup, Al Jolson was the son of a rabbi.

So many Christmas tunes are linked to memories, as Susan points out. And don't mess with our traditions!
