I took Jon and Chris out for lunch not long ago to find out more about their university programs. For Christopher it is chemical engineering and for Jon it is film -- could these programs be much different? At the end of our meal I told them that they are exceptional young men and will be missed, as will Josh.
Their parents have done a great job and of course they are fine guys in their own right. They are also a reminder that faith formation in a congregation matters. The Sunday School teachers, youth group leaders, Rev. Cathy and Laura all deserve credit for encouraging them in the Christian life.
Keep these three in your prayers. We will look forward to welcoming them back along the way.

These parents are in my thoughts these days,as they send their lads to university. Bittersweet moments in family life.
These parents have also been on my mind because they seem to have exemplified intentional faith formation for their kids. Throughout recent years I have witnessed as they have encouraged and sought out ways for their sons to be involved in the life and work of their church. They have been intentional....as we parents tend to naturally be for academics,and even athletics
and music,with our eye on post secondary education,
scholarships and better jobs. These parents though,
they seem to have had an eye too, on the potential
benefits of a lifelong faith for their kids. Their example
witness that need for parental (significant adult)
guidance and
encouragement in the faith life of kids. They have
stayed the course despite busy lives and societal
trends. Like their boys, they have been great role
models.
Now these three young men do happen to be
exceptional...generous, helpful, caring young men who
willingly helped in the life and work of our community,
and were fabulous role models and friends to our
younger gang.
Guys ...thanks for choosing church,
adding your youthful energy and perspective to our life
together and so too strengthening your own sense of
self into the exceptional young men you have become.
I won't hide my sense of loss totally..
I hate to see you go.....it has been a joy to share in
your journey and hey....study hard and have fun!!
One more thanks ....to the folks of St Pauls....thank you for cheering these guys (and their buddies) on every
chance you get....I do hear back how much it has meant to them.
Best of luck to these young men and to their parents as they face the next step in their own parenting journey. Particularly after reading Laura's comments, I am even more inspired by the boys and their families to follow in their example in how I guide my own sons. Thank you.
Three very special young men indeed, each contributing to the life of St. Paul's in their own unique way. We will miss them, but know that they take with them the many good wishes of the congregation and a Christian spirit which will certainly help them as they travel on this new journey in their lives.
