Scaramouche owners
The other day bread lover and CBC radio host Matt Galloway interviewed one of the owners of a Toronto restaurant called Scaramouche. It was about the decision to charge customers a modest three dollars for bread to cut down on waste and support a good cause. Every day a large garbage can of complimentary bread was being discarded, so now half of the three bucks goes to Community Food Centres Canada, an organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity. The other half buys higher quality bread and butter for those customers who are choosing bread with a meal. They are hoping that other restaurants join in on what they are calling the Bread Project.
This seems like an excellent initiative and I would suggest that it is God-blessed. The bible is its own bread project with many references in both testaments. Jesus taught us to beseech God for our daily bread rather than take it for granted, and bread is central to one of our Christian sacraments. Lots of you are aware that Ruth, my wife, has baked flavourful bread cut in generous portions for communion in several congregations and people love it.
I applaud the folks at Scaramouche and do hope that other food providers get on board. Bread is "the staff of life" physically and spiritually.
