Carter and Marilyn
Our home congregation, Trenton United, is diligent in including children and youth in its life and work. Even during COVID there has been a fund-raising cycling event for a worthy cause, tweens and teens are involved in dramatic presentations of scripture during worship, and they have enjoyed outdoor Sunday School. These events are intergenerational and I'm impressed by how committed many of the elders of the congregation are committed to making all of this work.
There was a lovely story on several CBC platforms about two of the folk from Trenton UC who are about 75 years apart in age. Marilyn is a retired kindergarten teacher who is pushing 80. Carter is an active six-year old. They've become friends despite the difference in ages and now physical distance from each other. They paired up as part of a congregational pen pal initiative and along the way they got together on several occasions. When Carter moved hundreds of kilometres away they kept it up. Marilyn is a regular at worship and takes part in our faith formation groups for adults. She is simply a lovely person, although not high profile.
Her willingness to be a caring, supportive presence in Carter's life would likely have gone unnoticed except for someone bringing it to the CBC's attention. This weekend the story closed out the national news on radio as a "feel-good" story in the midst of so much sorrow.
Congratulations to Marilyn, Carter, Rev. Isaac, and so many others whose quiet efforts are "saintly" in the truest sense of being the faithful followers of Christ. During yesterday morning's worship service knitted and crocheted prayer shawls were blessed before being distributed to those who could benefit from their comfort. On Friday a dedicated team will provide a free meal to anyone who wants one. Kindness abounds, thanks be to God
