This is International Women's Day and it will be acknowledged and even celebrated around the world. I know that women from our congregation, Trenton United, will be involved in an event to be held in Belleville at midday. The theme in Canada will be Gender Equity #BreakTheBias.

This year’s International Women’s Day (8 March) takes place against the backdrop of the ongoing global pandemic and emerging new strains, but also in a world desperately trying to emerge from the impact of this pandemic and focus again on other urgent and critical global issues such as climate change.
Some gatherings today will consider the disheartening and dangerous steps backward for women in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over a few months ago. Many would have left the oppression but Western nations, including Canada, were slow to offer refuge.
The Thursdays in Black campaign of the World Council of Churches encourages people of faith worldwide to wear black as a sign of our solidarity with the victims and survivors of gender-based violence. The United Church has been participating in Thursdays in Black since 2015.
As we journey through Lent, consider what you can do to end violence against women. Your prayers, attention, and action make a difference! Gender-based violence is a global issue that harms men, women, and children in their most private spheres. We often feel helpless and hopeless in the face of so much pain and injustice. In particular, we await with hope Canada’s National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. We pray that it will uncover the systemic causes of this violence and provide a path to eliminate it.
