Taking Advent to the Streets

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.
Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.

Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication

with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, w

ill guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:4-7

We will attend worship this morning but I will go as a "civilian" rather than as the presider, which is our son Isaac's role as our pastor. Today is the Joy Sunday of the Advent season and he will be the one to figure out how to navigate three lovely "joy" passages alongside the story of the testy John the Baptist preparing the way of the Christ. Ike is inventive so I have confidence he'll lead well.

I'm always been impressed by creative pastors and congregations, and that now includes Woodcliff United Church in Calgary. They have taken Advent to the streets, or at least the parking lot with an interactive art installation They've built a gigantic Advent calendar out of a collection of donated armoires and dressers, and filled the drawers with an assortment of treats, crafts, handmade gifts, ornaments and other holiday-season delights that are free for anyone who wants one.

The congregation has combined generosity, social justice, and the liturgical calendar in this "calendar", which is delightful. If you want to learn more, here is the CBC article
