Sarah, Lies, and Misdemeanours

There are many outrageous claims made by the president of the United States and since he took office he's been responsible for more than 10,000 falsehoods, half-truths, and complete lies. It's hard to imagine that anyone in the US, including those closest to him, expect the president to be consistently honest. It's bizarre, but this will be his legacy, the one thing at which he is actually superior to all those who've held the office before him.

There is a devoted circle of enablers who are more than willing to lie on behalf of the president and some of them have gone to prison for doing so. A couple of them have been in the news this past week, both of whom claim to be people of faith. Kellyanne Conway, the president's counsel and apparently a practicing Roman Catholic, has been under scrutiny for violating rules about being openly partisan while in her position of privilege. She has been caught in a number of lies during the past three years.

Then there is Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the outgoing press secretary who rarely held press conferences or issued statements, because the truth was so inconvenient. The Mueller report revealed that Sanders blatantly lied about the FBI, something she dismissed as a "slip of the tongue." She was vicious in her attacks on the press and regularly supported the lies and prevarications of the president. She's been described as the Liar-in-Chief and one wag suggested that she is leaving to spend more time lying to her family.

Her record is deeply troubling given that she claims to be Christian and is the daughter of a Baptist minister. I genuinely wonder how this person, a parent to young children, could justify such consistent deception by any standard, let alone that as a disciple of Christ.

The bible is quite clear that lying is unacceptable to God and there are no "fingers crossed" exemptions for political leaders and their minions. When King David was caught in his deceitful, destructive behaviour by the prophet Nathan he threw himself on God's mercy and begged for a new and clean hear. I'm not holding my breath on this one, but some genuine remorse and repentance would be refreshing throughout this administration.
